Tongariro National Trout Centre
The Tongariro National Trout Centre is 4 km south of Turangi on State Highway 1.
This attraction has a new visitor centre which has a full education programme for schools, run by the Department of Conservation Taupo Fishery educator. The programme has a choice of three options and is free, but donations are appreciated.
The main aim of this programme is to raise awareness of the importance and value of the Taupo trout fishery and freshwater conservation in New Zealand. Taupo for Tomorrow is ideal for teachers looking for a hands-on learning experience outside of the classroom, and who are keen to incorporate themes about sustainability into their lesson plans.
School groups have three options to choose from when booking a programme:
Option 1
A general tour of the centre that gives a brief overview of the Taupo trout fishery and trout ecology.
Option 2
A more detailed programme that focuses on the fishery and trout, as well as the importance of freshwater and renewable resource use.
Option 3
A tailor-made environmental programme developed in accordance with the needs of the classroom teacher.
